Policy Recommendations
Regulating Nicotine LevelsOver the past decade, tobacco companies have increased nicotine levels by 15%, making it more difficult to users to quit. Nicotine levels are controllable features of cigarettes, and should be monitored and regulated by government agencies.
Reducing pH LevelsThe smoke pH hovers around 6.5 on cigarettes, making them more easily inhalable. Raising the cigarette smoke pH up to 8 or above would reduce the risk of lung cancer.
Limiting PromotionThere is no comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising, promotion, or sponsorship in Korea. Unregulated package coloring and imagery contribute to consumers' misperception that certain cigarettes are safer than others.
